A new wall system recently installed in the emergency department of North Ottawa Community Health Systems not only supported a Grand Haven base company, but also is saving the hospital time and money.

Unislat, the Grand Haven based company, installed the new wall system in the storage room of the department. The room is more organized than it was before, said Chris Fortin, clinical manager of the emergency department. “Having everything separated and in its own spot has helped staff save time,” he said. “No longer do (staff members) need to look around, under and above store room items.”

The new system does not affect patients directly, but it can indirectly because it can shorten their stay in the ER. The staff spends less time trying to find items in the storage room. “Patient satisfaction is inversely proportional to the time spent in the ER, so anything we can do to save time in the ER we attempt,” Fortin said.

The system is very effective for hospitals because everything can be color coded for easy recognition and optimum inventory control, said Jamie Kosch, sales representative for Unislat. “Everybody has welcomed the product with open arms.”

It is specialized to meet the needs of the space. Unislat has customized accessories including bins, shelving and other items such as catheter holders. All of these are interchangeable.

It has been approved by the Michigan Health Inspector and under joint commission requirements for infection prevention and control.

Prior to the Unislat system being installed, the storage unit had large grey industrial shelving. This caused many items to be positioned very far in the back, out of sight and reach of the staff, said Michele Andres, director of materials management.

Not only does the new shelving save time, but also money for the hospital. “There is a definite savings in time for nursing in looking for products, a reduction of overall inventory by hundreds of dollars and a savings to staff for stocking inventory items,” Andres said.
